Aisatsu
Before we dive into the most common phrases in Japan, let’s talk about aisatsu (挨拶) and its use in daily conversation.
Aisatsu (挨拶) or “greetings” in Japanese is used for respectful communication and taught from childhood to later ages in life. This form of communication is practiced by expressing a positive and warm attitude towards teachers, seniors, and corporate higher-ups.
Greetings in Japanese
Here are some common Aisatsu you can use daily:
ありがとうございます (Arigatou Gozaimasu) – Thank you
おはようございます (Ohayou Gozaimasu) – Good Morning
こんにちは (Konnichiwa) – Good Evening
こんばんは (Konbanwa)- Good Night
おやすみなさい (Oyasuminasai) -Good Night
初めまして (Hajimemashite)- Nice to meet you (for self-introduction)
行ってきます(Ittekimasu)- I’mLeaving
行ってらしゃい (Itterasshai)- Please come back safely
ごちそうさまでした (Gochisousama Deshita) -Thank you for the food
すみません (Sumimasen) – Excuse me / Sorry
ごめんなさい (Gomennasai) I’m sorry (for someone with the same status)
おつかれさまでした (Otsukare Sama Desu) Thank you for working hard
Whether you are a student, employee, or a company executive, it is a must to know basic AISATSU in Japan. This is equivalent to being respectful which exists in all cultures, and if you live in Japan, it is as common as breathing. So, make sure to practice the Asian bow with Ohayou Gozaimasu the first morning you step into Japan.
